26/11/2008 Highway Asset Management Decision Making: Learning to Think Like an Asset Manager Aston University Course 1 day
Asset management assists organisations to understand and plan for the maintenance, operation and development of their assets. In an ideal world this is a simple task; desirable standard are identified, funding provided and the standards delivered. In reality asset management is difficult. It involves making choices between competing demands, usually with limited available funding. Whilst some progress has been made in the preparation of initial asset management plans many have reached a hiatus when it comes to using the information they have produced to make better decisions. How does asset management help us to choose between investing in different assets? How should we choose between investing in maintenance and improvement? Isn’t this like choosing between and apple and an orange, or a fish and a bicycle? Rather than pretend that there is a magical answer to these questions this course provides simple tools to illustrate some methods that can be used to aid analysis between competing demands

27/11/2008 Towards a Sustainable Transport System: Responsible Action on Climate Change Aston University Course 1 day
The seemingly never ending increase in Transport Demand is putting considerable strain on the UKs infrastructure and economy, which is generally accepted as being unsustainable and potentially damaging to the Planet. The UK Government has acknowledged this and published a Command Paper in October 2007 (Green Paper due for publication in mid 2008); “Towards a Sustainable Transport System”: this document describes how the Government is responding to findings and recommendations made in both the recent Eddington Transport Study and the Stern review, in order to improve transport’s contribution to economic growth and productivity – in a sustainable way! The paper sets out Transport Goals and associated plans for the Department for Transport to 2013-14. This course sets the context for sustainability, guides delegates through the document and examines the underlying issues with consideration as to how the challenges might best be met.

27/11/2008 Transport Evidence for Planning Inquiries: Consultants Perspective Aston University Course 1 day
This course is aimed to provide a basic understanding of transport evidence preparation by transport consultants. This course is designed for both the public sector officers, transport consultants and engineers to cover both the policy objectives and technical evidence. 28/11/2008 Shared Streets - An Award Winning Case Study, New Road Brighton PTRC Education and Research Services Seminar 1 day
PTRC and Urban Initiatives were delighted to make the 2008 Award for Urban Transport Design to Brighton and Hove City Council for New Road Brighton. Participants in attending this technical visit and seminar will have the opportunity to explore the reasons and background to the scheme and gain a greater understanding of shared surfaces/streets concepts. To realise the Council’s objectives innovative design was required to accommodate the differing needs of users within a vitally important urban environment. For this reason the Council sought a design team of the highest order to work with local people in designing a world-class scheme. Speakers from Gehl Architects and Martin Stockley Associates, which advised on the scheme, will join speakers from the City Council in setting out the process and ideas, to transform a mundane street into the fourth most popular place for people to spend time in the city.
