Case Studies
Felicity Jarvie
Felicity Jarvie, who is studying Environmental Management and Technology at Herriot Watt University, spent much of the summer of 2003 with consultants Steer Davies Gleave working on a project promoting changes in travel behaviour in East Dumbartonshire. Felicity was really surprised at what can be achieved through voluntary change and although she had been planning to choose an outdoors job on graduating she says
I would now seriously consider an office based job with opportunities to get out and about.
Having chosen a transport option for her final year, she says
I may well choose a career in transport planning.
Eleanor Mackay
Eleanor Mackay, who has a degree in Physical Geography from Lancaster, was considering her career options when she heard about the scheme. She spent the summer of 2003 with Nottinghamshire County Council, working on a variety of projects including a study of accessibility and reviewing school travel planning arrangements.
"I really learned a lot about what I could expect as a transport planner."
Eleanor is now studying for a Masters in Transport at Leeds, where she says
"The course is really interesting and challenging, putting what I learned at Nottingham into context. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to apply my skills gained from both the work experience and masters in my future career in transport."
The deadline for applications has now passed. Details of the 2009 scheme will be available from November 2008.
